History of Christmas Festival

Around the world, Christmas is one of the most anticipated festivals. Christmas is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm by the people of the Christian faith.

Christmas is marked by the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is regarded as God’s Son by Christians.

What is Christmas?

Christ (or Jesus) is the reason for the name ‘Christmas’. The Mass (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is a celebration commemorating Jesus’ death and resurrection for us.

It was only permitted to have a ‘Christ-Mass’ service after sunset (and before sunrise the following day), so it was at midnight!

Thus, Christ-Mass becomes Christmas.

Whether you are a Christian or not, everyone around the world celebrates Christmas. Family and friends gather during this time to celebrate the good things they have in life.

Additionally, people enjoy Christmas because they get to give and receive presents!

When is Christmas?

Billions of people around the world celebrate Christmas annually as a religious and cultural event commemorating Jesus Christ’s birth on December 25.

During the reign of Constantine (the first Christian Roman Emperor), Christmas was celebrated on December 25th for the first time in 336. Despite this, it was not a festival of the Roman state.

Although there are a variety of traditions and theories as to why December 25th is celebrated, Christmas is celebrated on this day every year.

The day on which Mary was informed she was expecting a very special child (called the Annunciation) is still celebrated on March 25th – it was the day when she first found out she would have a child. After 9 months, it is the 25th December!

Many early Christians believed that the world began on this day, and also that Jesus died on that day while an adult (Nisan 14 in the Jewish calendar) and that this meant that Jesus was born and died on the same day in the same year.

When is Christmas in 2024?

In 2024, Christmas will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 25.

In India, the festival is known as “the big day” by many non-Christians who observe it as a secular holiday.

Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Christianity celebrates Christmas as the birth anniversary of Jesus of Nazareth, a religious leader whose teachings are at the core of their beliefs.

As the early Christians believed that Jesus was the light of the world, they believed this was the right time for celebrating Jesus’ birth.

People exchange gifts, decorate Christmas trees, attend church, eat meals with their families and friends, and, of course, wait for Santa Claus.

Christmas Carols, Holly and Mistletoe, and even the Winter Solstice customs were given Christian meanings based on the Christian meaning of the Winter Solstice.

On December 25, Christmas is celebrated as a holy religious celebration as well as a worldwide festival of culture and commerce

Historically, the 25th of December has been a nation-wide holiday since 1870.

Who Celebrates Christmas?

Christmas is celebrated by most Christians. In addition, it has become such a huge cultural event that even people who do not follow Christianity can participate in it in countries with a large Christian population.

Approximately 160 countries around the world celebrate Christmas, with celebrations varying based on the country. The day after or before Christmas is celebrated by some countries, whilst others celebrate it on Christmas Day.

Pew Research Center survey findings indicate that nine out of 10 Americans celebrate Christmas.

One-third of those who celebrate see it as a cultural celebration rather than as a religious holiday; only about half see it this way.

Only 39 percent of young people aged 18-29 regard Christmas as a religious holiday, compared with 66 percent of older people.

Observance in India

The cosmopolitan cities of Mumbai, Goa, Delhi are among the cities with a large Roman Catholic population.

In India, the midnight mass is therefore considered to be a part of the grand celebration of Christmas.

The entire family gets together and walks to join in the mass together.

Public attractions in India decorate their premises with beautifully decorated Christmas trees. The colorful Christmas lights covering most landmarks and houses make a stroll down this vibrant and happening street an unforgettable experience.

In India, Christians also hang mistletoe in their houses according to centuries-old customs. By doing so, people believe that they ward off any malefic spirits and invite good fortune into their homes.

Nowadays, couples also kiss under the mistletoe, which is a symbol of fertility.
