When he refused to provide them to the public, the Goddess became angry and destroyed him. Later, at the request of devotees, she is said to have manifested herself here. Furthermore, there is a belief that a woman who sacrificed her life for justice herself incarnated as Masani Amman. For this reason, this Goddess is also revered as the ‘Goddess of Justice’.

Reason for the Name: Here, the Goddess is seen in a reclining posture in a burial ground (mayanam), hence she was called “Mayana Sayani,” which over time became “Masani.”

Architecture of the Masani Amman Temple

The architecture of the Masani Amman Temple is very unique. Here, the Goddess is depicted in a long, reclining posture. This is a rare sight not found in any other temple. The idol of the Goddess is about 17 feet long. Additionally, the Mayana Surai Amman shrine located here is also very significant. A unique feature of this temple is that devotees write their grievances on a piece of paper and tie it to the trident (soolam) as a form of prayer.

Apart from this, there are shrines for Vinayagar, Murugan, and other subsidiary deities. Special pujas are performed here every Friday. During Thai Amavasai and other special days, hundreds of thousands of devotees visit this temple to have darshan of the Goddess.

Since Masani Amman is considered the Goddess of Justice, various people who have suffered injustice, those who have incurred business losses, and those with health problems come here to pray to the Goddess. In particular, devotees believe that they get quick resolutions for property disputes and other unfair issues. The number of people who come here to pray for the recovery of lost items and the removal of obstacles to marriage is immense.
