  • According to legend, Mayan, the father-in-law of Ravana, built this temple during the Treta Yuga.
  • Sages like Narada, Agastya, and Bhrigu are said to have worshipped at this temple.

  • Thiruketheeswaram is one of the five principal Shiva temples in Sri Lanka, the others being Naguleswaram, Tenavaram, Thirukoneswaram, and Munneswaram.
  • This temple has been praised in the Thevaram hymns by the Nayanmars, the Saivite saints.
