Read Thirumuruganpoondi Temple History in Tamil
Lord Murugan has a significant place in the Hinduism. He is predominantly worshipped by the people in Tamil Nadu and hence he is called as “Tamil God”. Lord Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Murugan came to birth as six children through the flames from the third eye of the Lord Shiva and he basically grew with the Karthika women. Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan were involved in a lot of “Thiruvilayadal”, which forms a history behind various temples. Let us see in detail about the history behind one of the famous and important shrine Lord Shiva – Thirumuruganathaswamy Temple, Thirumuruganpoondi, Tirupur.
According to the ancient literatures, Lord Murugan came to this Shiva shrine and installed Shiva Lingas, worshiped Lord Shiva it in order to get rid of the Brahmahadhi Dosha caused by the killing of the demon Soorapathman. This Temple is the 206th shrine out of the 274 shrines to receive the devotional song of Lord Shiva .
When the poet Sundarar was returning from Thirumurugapoondi with the gifts he had received from the King Cheraman Peruman Nayanar, Lord Shiva sent his giants in the guise of thieves to loot Sundarar’s gifts. The worried Sundarar went to Thirumurugapoondi and appealed to the Lord Shiva by singing a hymn. He then questioned Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati that why are they here without trying to save the devotees in this town from the fear of highway robbers. The hymn sung by Sundarar ended with the question as why are you here my Lord? On hearing the hymn, Lord Shiva made his giants return all the objects looted to Sundarar.
In proof to this incident, in the hall of the temple, there is a sculpture of Lord Shiva holding a bow in the form of a hunter and in front of it are two sculptures of Sundarar expressing anxiety and happiness. These two sculptures of Sundarar show the anxiety of being looted and the other shows the happiness when he got back the objects snatched away. Thirumuruganpoondi is a place of reparation to regain lost property.
Lord Ganesha here is worshipped under the name of Call Ganesha. After Sundarar’s gift items were looted by Lord Shiva, Ganesha called Sundara and showed him the location of the objects looted and hence he got the name Call Ganesha.
Thirumuruganpoondi is a west facing site located on the north bank of the Noyyal River. Located facing west, this temple does not have an entrance tower like other temples. Outside the temple is an ebony lighthouse dedicated to the Kongu sites. The temple is spread over an area of about 1 acre and has 2 walls with high walls on all four sides. The sculpture of the main deity of the temple, Lord Thirumuruganathar is said to be about 2 and a half feet high in the form of a Shivalinga. Looking west is the Moolavar Shrine. On the back wall of the sanctum there is a beautiful carving of an elephant holding a Shiva Lingam by its trunk.
In the inner courtyard are the shrines of Niruti Ganesha, 63 Nayanmars, Shanmugar, Durga, Byravar, Saneeswarar and Navagraha. To the right of the Moolavar Shrine, is the Shanmugar Shrine with six faces facing south and the sculpture is 5 feet in height and has 5 faces in the front and one face on the back. To the left of the Moolavar Shrine is the Shrine of the Goddess Poonmulai Valliyamai facing west.
Inside the temple is the holy pond Subramania Theertha in the Coutyard and outside the temple located the Brahma Theertha and the Gnana Theertha. It is the belief of the devotees that the paranoia will be cured by bringing the paranoid people to this Shiva Temple and making them stay here and bathe in the three theerthas daily and worship the Lord Shiva.
Thirumuruganpoondi is located on the Avinashi-Thirupur road, about 5 km from Avinashi, another Shiva temple in the Kongu country – Thirupur.
There is a temple called Madhavaneswarar Temple at the back of the Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple which is very close to that temple. There is a large sculpture of the holy bull – Nandi on the roof top of the front hall of the temple. There is a separate shrine to Lord Ketu in the northwest corner of the temple. The Temple history says that the Lord Kedhu worshiped Lord Shiva at this place. Therefore, this temple is a rare place of reparation for the devotees of Kedhu Dosha.
The temple celebrates a 13 day main festival in the Tamil Month Masi (Mid – March). The other festivals like Maha Sivarathri, Thirukarthikai, Arutradarisanam, Annabhishekam, Kandasashti, Thaipusam, Navratri and Vaikasi Visakam were also celebrated in this temple.
